Some
Obscure Sayings in Thomas
Many
or most of the sayings in the Gospel of Thomas require some sort of interpretation.
The prologue tells us so; their inner meaning is to be found, and many
of them are meaningless without this kind of interpretation. Once we get
a feel for the symbolism and language that the Gospel of Thomas uses,
most of the sayings can yield some meaning for us. But a few of the sayings
are more than esoteric: they are obscure, and it can particularly useful
to know something of how the same symbolism was used in other writings.
For other sayings I have simply included information helpful for understanding
the background to them. Here are notes on a few of these sayings.
